Happy New Years All Y’all!!!
John LincolnParticipantWhen it comes to plumbing and plumbing repair I almost always yield to the pros or to those who want to attempt a repair. I learned long ago how to make leaks and am pretty successful at it. SSI already has a leak (or two) so my particular specialty is no longer needed. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantI will be out around 11:30 or so. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantI watched the videos about thermaling and ridge soaring. The ridge soaring was a bit scary to me. But the video on thermaling was very good. Especially the angle of bank and speeds. I don’t always bank as steeply as James Cooper but I do frequently bank and fly at the speeds he describes, 50 to 60 knots while thermaling.
So James video might help. Tighter circles will keep the glider in the area of lift better. And tighter circles will require higher speeds. For those of you searching give it a try! It just might end up adding time to your next flight.

John LincolnParticipantI wish to thank Don for organizing this work party. Thanks Don. I can not make it as Val and I will be on our way to Florida for 2.5 weeks. Otherwise I would be there with my chainsaw and diesel fuel to get the burn pile going. Please be careful with the saws and fires. We don’t want anyone hurt. John Lincoln, Maintenance
John LincolnParticipantIf the Friday forecast holds I would be interested in flying on Friday. That said it has deteriorated since yesterday when I first checked it. Saturday looks better than Friday, but it’s still a long way out. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantGood Job Animesh and Paul. All at SSI are happy for you and your accomplishment!

John LincolnParticipantJust an FYI, The Toolcat is now in the hangar. John Osborn has the key. It should be pretty much out of the way where it is on the south side. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantI forgot to mention that I got the charger for the cart. It’s on the back of said cart. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantDenny and those who might be interested. As to avoiding a Paraglider it’s all visual in my case. I grew up and learned to fly without the advantages of transponders, Flarm, or ADS-B. It was and still is for me now see and avoid.
I don’t know but I would doubt that the Paraglider pilot had a transponder or ADS-B. I didn’t see a strobe light. Maybe he had Flarm. But I don’t have Flarm so no help there.
In my experience see-and-avoid has never made any noticeable difference in flying a task. Only a momentary deviation in your current location. Sink on the other hand can and has made large deviations necessary. And of course sink has ended more flights prematurely resulting in land outs than I could ever mention.
One of the interesting observations I made when I spotted the Paraglider was the feeling that he WASN’T moving. I was traveling about 70 to 80 knots and he was probably doing 20 to 30 knots. A closure rate of 50 knots. He seemed to be standing still.
Also I never expected to see a Paraglider. He must have been towed or winched up and then found a thermal.
