Don GrilloKeymaster
I’ll be happy to tow today. Looks to be a fine soaring day.
Don
Don GrilloKeymasterDo we have a tow pilot for Tuesday & Wednesday?
Don GrilloKeymasterSteve is correct in that Tuesday, Wed and Thursday look good.
This week may bring some of the best soaring weather we will see all season. Take a look at Dr. Jacks UniViewer , select NC (North Central) then click on Current Day, +1 or +2 then click through the different Parameters. You can also look at the NAM (84 hour forecast) or the RAP (12 hour forecast) here. Read the descriptions for an explanation of each graph to know what you are looking at. If you’ve never used Dr. Jacks soaring forecasts you will have to register on the site first, it’s free.
Calling all towpilots and instructors. We’ll need you this week if you are available. I expect we will have a number of the private ships wanting to do x-country flights and a number of our members wanting to fly. Please use the bookourplane.com to show when you are available.
Best Regards,
Don
Don GrilloKeymasterRich,
Come on out. See you at the field.
Aviation weather concerns this period consist of: * Lake breeze and an ENE wind shift late this AM/early PM * Developing soaking rain this evening and overnight with MVFR and potentially IFR cigs/vsbys * Low potential for some RASN for a brief period late tonight, mainly RFD and DPA. * Gusty easterly winds tonight into Sunday morning Light and variable winds will start the day off along with some very patchy/shallow BR at outlying airports. A freshening lake breeze will switch winds easterly/northeasterly, first at GYY, and then into MDW and ORD around 17-19z. Winds will then remain east or northeast through the rest of the TAF period. Rain chances look to increase quickly this evening, although there remains some level of uncertainty regarding just how quickly the low-levels saturate with the latest thinking that it may take a little longer at ORD/MDW/RFD than currently indicated by some of the more aggressive hi-res guidance. Eventually, MVFR vsbys/cigs should be commonplace, with a potential for IFR conditions. Have introduced TEMPO groups for a period where the steadiest/heaviest rainfall is currently expected, and these may need to be moved to prevailing groups if confidence increases. Latest guidance suggests that a cold rain should prevail at ORD/MDW, with some potential for a brief rain/snow mix developing at RFD and DPA. This potential still seems pretty low right now, but perhaps just high enough at RFD to justify a brief PROB30. Precipitation chances will begin to trend downwards through Sunday morning and certainly through the early-mid afternoon hours with some improvement to cigs/vsbys during this time. Carlaw
Don GrilloKeymasterSpringtime usually brings the best soaring weather. The ground is heating after the long cold winter and releasing lots of warmth which turns into strong thermal activity, which we experienced on Wednesday. As mentioned by Steve we had a number of members make some long and high flights.
Three members, Don, John D. and Geoff, in their personal gliders made a nice long x-country trip, first going southwest to Rochelle then north to Beloit, WI and finally back to Sky Soaring. Over 180+ kilometers with average speeds of over 70km per hour. Although, the longest and furthest x-county flight was from our friend at Chicago Glider Club, Herb Killian, with an impressive 420+ kilometer flight.
Friday, May 7, is looking like another decent soaring day. We’ll need a towpilot if one is available.
Please remember to use bookourplane.com to reserve your time slot and glider.Regards,
Don
F2Don GrilloKeymasterToday should prove to be a decent soaring day. A high temp of 61, mostly blue skies with a chance of some fair weather cumulus clouds this afternoon. Light winds out of the NW. lift is predicted to be between 5-6000 ft
Several private ship owners will assemble and possibly attempt a x-country task.
John Scott to provide the tows.
Don GrilloKeymasterHi Larry, one of members brought out a nice monitor. Thank you for your effort.
Don
Don GrilloKeymasterLarry, please check the size of your monitors. 20” is really a bit to small for our old eyes. A minimum of 23” would be ideal. We only have room for one monitor on our desk.
Don
Don GrilloKeymasterHi Greg, I will have to agree with Andy, our golf carts are pretty much on their last legs. Andy has done a lot of work to keep them going. I don’t really think it is necessary to install an inverter on one. We do have a generator.
— DonDon GrilloKeymasterWe are planning to fly this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please use the Bookourplane scheduler to block out 1 hour for a spring checkout. Steve Snyder is available to instruct. 2-33 Stars & Stripes and the flapped 17 meter Lark are available 2 seaters. The Krozno is down. The 1-26 and 1-34 are also available. The PW-5 needs to be assembled.
Don
Don GrilloKeymasterI have to agree with John D. This would be a very good buy for someone looking for a nice glider. And, I believe, it comes with an enclosed trailer. I did see some of this glider when it was in Getzlemans shop getting a new paint job and it looked very nice. I’m guessing you could get it for less than the asking price of $12,000.
Don
Don GrilloKeymasterI may stop out later as I take my first motorcycle ride of the season, but not planning on staying or doing any work. I’m to sore from yesterdays activities. ;-). I think being a religious holiday, folks are staying home with family.
