John LincolnParticipant
Just a quick add to John DeRosa’s thread here. If one of the Magnetos is out on the Pawnee then it is running on just the second Magneto. That means no back-up. If the second fails then the motor stopsĀ and of course everyone will be landing soon and fairly close to where they are. It isn’t safe to takeoff with one Magneto not running and hence the wise decision not to tow on Sunday. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantWhat a great day it turned out to be. Even though the forecast looked fairly weak Jimbob Slocum had up to 8 knots on his averager. The clouds were fairly honest. It didn’t go real high up to 6300 msl but usually lower, 5600 to 5900 msl. Mark Mallamo was out giving instruction to the Palmers. Jimbob was first up and had no trouble sticking. Our message forum made it fairly easy to get the operation going. I had a great tow from Nick. He took Jim and myself to fairly good thermals and when I asked him to speed up a bit he was right on it. Thank You Nick. I flew for a bit over 3 hours and covered 156 miles. If I remember correctly there were 8 or 9 flights. All y’all out there need to watch the weather, make a few calls and get up in the air. Summer is passing and you don’t want to be looking back on it wishing you had flown more. NOW is the time. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantI would also like to fly. Weather look ok. I’ll be out around 11:30 to clean up around the east hangar. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantNick Legenza gave me a great tow, Thanks Nick. I hope you are able to build some PIC time that is so necessary for you aviation endeavors. Friday had some challenges. I was only able to fly 23 miles in my first hour. It took me 35 minutes and two thermals to finally get up to 6000 msl. After I was finally able to get high things worked out better. I had a nice tour of the country side. Went to Lake Lawn first, then Poplar Grove then Rochelle then back north to Kirkpatrick back south to Aero Lake Estates and finally back to SSI. 191 miles. I was trying to see if I could fly Gold distance which I made. (186.7 miles) My high was 7700 msl and my averager had my thermals at 3 knots. There were a few spots at 8 knots. All in all a nice 4 hour ans eleven minutes. I feel for those who had trouble. I found plenty of 8 knots down and I can easily see why some folks weren’t able to stick today. And the smoke was awful. Most of the time I could only see about 5 miles. I hope it blows away sooner rather than later. Again Congrats to Nick, nice work! John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantI plan to get to the field around 11 to 11:30 and launch around 1. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantJohn Lincoln here. Put me down for 2.
John LincolnParticipantThursday was a nice day indeed. My averager showed 3.5 knot lift for the whole day. I did have bursts of 7 to 9 knots of lift which was very nice. I never got to cloud base as the lift seemed to stop well short of the bases. Wind at altitude was fairly light. 12 miles south of Hinckley is as far south as I have ever been from Sky Soaring. All y’all out there need to come out and fly on the nice days. SSI’s ships are up and ready for use. Our fleet is there for your use and it is the one big benefit that the club has. Use one of our ships and no hourly charge for it like the other clubs. So lets get out there and FLY!!!
John LincolnParticipantThis is where we stand right now. John Osborn and I are going to rig the PW-5 on Thursday at 11:00 and we will then put it in the west hangar. We might have to move Pumpkin some to accommodate the PW-5. I’ll send out a notice when I get home Thursday that the PW-5 is rigged and ready to go. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantJust an FYI. I’m no stranger to landing on runway 9. Did it on Monday and have done it several time each year. Also 15 kts of breeze is very near the top limit of what the club says is acceptable. If an operation is run remember the briefing, and GSO are required. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantIf we get an operation going I’ll be out around 11:30. Still hoping, but if not tomorrow then hopefully Tuesday. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantI have been following the weather for tomorrow fairly closely. For me it’s been going the wrong way. Light winds are now up to 10 knots out of the SW. I don’t really mind that much wind or direction but for my second flight I would really like something more down the runway or much lighter. Thermals are down from 3.5 to 3.3 and dropping off sharply at 4:30. And no Cu’s. All in all I’m going to pass on tomorrow. Sorry if I caused any of you a problem. John Lincoln
John LincolnParticipantI’ll be out around 11:30 to noon. John Lincoln
