    I think it is GREAT that our club members are thinking about working on their badges past the Bronze. One important comment about using the Sky Soaring Oudie for badge flight recording. It very useful GPS moving map display for flying. Unfortunately, it will not work for application for an SSA/FAI badge such as Silver, Gold and Diamond. You need an FAI approved logger which the Oudie is not.

    Here is a list of FAI approved loggers. Kind of pricy. https://wingsandwheels.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Igc+flight+recorder. I use the Nano 3 which is also a navigation device.

    I will keep an eye open for a used one.

    Thanks Don! This was a surprisingly easy task for the altitude requirement of the Silver Badge which I have done before, but regrettably never took along a flight recorder to capture it. Don took the time to show me how the club’s Oudie flight recorder works (it is pretty simple) and I brought it along on my flight to see what would happen.

    I encourage other members to get a tutorial on the Oudie and bring it along on your solo flights if it looks like a promising day. You may be happily surprised!

    Next up are the Silver duration and distance flights with are admittedly harder.

    All Instructors,Thanks for attending at these meetings and working together to coordinate our instructing.Many hanks also to Don and Geoff for leading this effort.

    Two comments;
    FAA Private Glider PTS – I did make 10 copies of the PTS. They are located next to the copies of the Glider Flying Handbook, FAST, Wander books, etc. There is a cost for any of these items which is listed on a nearby sheet.
    Bob Wander Progress Records – We also talked last night about needing to use of the “Progress Record” check lists in the back of the Wander book that we are using as a syllabus. There is a Student Pilot version and Instructor version of the list.
    The idea is to use these lists is to enable any instructor to coordinate instruction with any student. After a quick review of the student’s progress in the Progress Record the next flight can build on their skills and may help the student make faster progress.
    It would be optimal for the student to return to the field with their personal copy of the Wander book for the instructor to review. But we all know that this may not happen. So we agreed last night to create a “Green Book” to hold a Progress Record form (Instructor version) for each student. A sample form is attached. The “Green Book” is stored next to the “Blue Book” in the flight box.
    Thanks again,

    New topic posted by Don Grillo. Recap of Instructors Meeting., In Flight Instructors forum.

    For those of you that were not on the zoom call, we discussed;

    Condor Flight Simulator;

    Using Condor for initial student familiarization of glider flight
    in all regimes of flight. The SSA is offering a $2500 grant for
    purchasing the proper equipment to setup a simulator.

    More discussion about using Condor and finding 2 instructors that
    would head up the program will be discussed. There will be a full
    Condor setup at Oshkosh at the SSA booth to try out.

    Briefings;

    Discussion about holding a Pre and Post briefing with students.
    Using Bob Wanders lesson plans, have a short lesson briefing with
    the student prior to flying that lesson. Then go fly. Have a
    debreif after the flight to discuss how the flight went.

    Introduce the PTS to students prior to solo and combine PTS
    standards into Bob Wanders lessons.

    John D. will print out copies of the Private Pilot PTS and will be
    available in the office. Also available as a pdf on
    skysoaring.com

    Next Meeting;

    For next months meeting, please select a maneuver you would like
    to discuss. How to properly teach and execute the maneuver. What
    is the glider doing when you do the maneuver ie. overbanking
    tendency etc.

    Send your suggestions to Geoff and Don, or reply here.

    We had a great Soaring day yesterday, lift above 7000 feet. John D had a three hour flight and John Lincoln had a very long flight as well. I’ll be out there today mowing, if anybody needs a tow come on out. Skysight says there will be lift to 6000 feet today.

    I will be there to fly on Thursday.
    We had Q’s today even though SkySight.IO didn’t predicted a blue day.
    Same diagnosis for Thursday – blue. But life is now predicted to be 1,000ft higher up to 7K.
    See you at the airport.

    Is there any interest in getting an operation going on Thursday. It’s looking like a pretty good day. Lift from 3.1 to 4.7 knots up to as high as 7,100 feet msl. Northeast winds from 9 kts dropping to 6 kts later. There won’t be any Cu’s but who knows there might be dust devils, I’ve seen 6 or 7 so far this year. John O and I will be out rigging the PW-5 at 11. We should be done with that by noon so if we can get a tow pilot I would like to fly after that, probably around 1:30 or so. How about it, any tow pilots? John Lincoln

    John O – Thanks for heading up the assembly of the PW-5 (PW-5)

    One correction about installing a radio in Pumpkin – I didn’t give up on the idea. It is still in the plans. It has just been postponed until we disassemble the ship in the fall.

    Hi Dennis,I believe the plan is to assemble the Club PW 5 and store it in the West hanger. That would have been done by now except there is no room until the 2-33 is assembler and moved out of the hanger. The 2-33 assembly was waiting on John D to install a radio. I understand he has given up on that idea so we should be able to assemble it this week. And following its removal we should be able to assemble the PW 5 and store it in the hanger. Hull insurance is not a factor.John O

    Andy – As Mark Twain once said after a newspaper article announced him dying, “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated”. The club is fully operational! Besides an instructor, we needed a tow pilot. If no pilot holds up their hand, give a tow pilot a call and convince them.
    PS – Jeff Moran, Greg Tomczyk and myself mowed and trimmed the entire field today. Looks great.
