Steve
Steven SnyderParticipantJeff;
It was good to have you back out today. Unfortunately your comments did not come through with your reply. We think it may be an issue with certain cellphones.
Steven SnyderParticipantAnother great day at the office, er airfield. 12 flights total thanks to Mark and Gary towing. Rich, Animesh and Paul all got in some flights and Art took up a scenic ride. Plus a big shout out to Jeff Moran for getting out after an extended break. Welcome back!
I will be making a go/no go decision about Sunday in a couple of hours.
Steve
Steven SnyderParticipantFor the weekend Friday 8 Oct through Monday 11 October. Looks like Saturday and Sunday will be the best days for flying. Temps will warm up and the rain tapers off. The season is going to end soon so let’s get some flights in before the snow flies. Sign up now!
Steve
Steven SnyderParticipantYou do read your Soaring Magazine, I hope?
September issue. Answers are: Question 1: C; Question 2: C; Question 3: E; Question 4: D.
Answer Question 5: D. Th e optimum bank angle and airspeed to lose the least amount of energy (altitude) in a completed turn for ALL gliders is 45º of bank and an airspeed equal to the level flight minimum sink speed (for the current operating weight) plus 18.9% ( approximately 20%).

Steve
Steven SnyderParticipantLast but not least.
Question 5: You need to reverse direction and you want to conserve energy … or, you are in a rope break scenario shortly after takeoff (above 200 ft AGL) and you have decided it is safe to make an approximately 210ºturn and return to the runway, what angle of bank and airspeed will lose the least amount of altitude for ALL gliders?
A. 20º of bank and level flight minimum sink speed
B. 30º of bank and level flight minimum sink speed plus 5%
C. 35º of bank and level flight minimum sink speed plus 7.5%
D. 45º of bank and level flight minimum sink speed plus 18.9%
E. 60º of bank and level flight minimum sink speed plus 20%
F. I do not have a clue
Steven SnyderParticipantQuestion 4: For a coordinated 45ºbanked turn, for any glider, by what percentage does the minimum SINK SPEED increase over the level flight minimum SINK SPEED?
A. 0% the minimum speed is identical to the level flight minimum sink speed
B. 4% more than the level flight minimum sink speed
C. 9% more than the level fl ight minimum sink speed
D. 19% more than the level fl ight minimum sink speed
E. 25% more than the level flight minimum sink speed
F. I do not have a clue
Steven SnyderParticipantIf you want to fly Saturday it will have to be early. Sunday appears to be rain all day.
Steve
Steven SnyderParticipantANOTHER beautiful day at 55LL. Where have I heard that before?? 8 flights today. Thanks to Geoff for towing so John Scott could enjoy a 2 hr flight in the 1-26. Brendan and Denny took flights and Gavin made good progress doing pattern tows. I had the special privilege of taking old friend Kees up in the Krosno for a 1/2 hr flight. Could have been much longer as we were chasing corn leaves at 5k.
Steve
Steven SnyderParticipantSky Sight has improved dramatically for Friday with possible lift up to 6kMSL. Come on out! Tows at 12:00.
