14 CFR § 91.3 – Responsibility and authority of the pilot in command. › Subpart A – General
(a) The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft. (b) In an in-flight emergency requiring immediate action, the pilot in command may deviate from any rule of this part to the extent required to meet that emergency. If someone creates an emergency by being in the way when you are on final to land, you do what you need to do. If in doubt, see the FAR above.
Rich WalendaParticipantHello:
I do not ask for a penny for anything, including instructing. I am a FAA advanced ground instructor, CPR/AED Instructor, Gracie Survival Tactics Jui Jitsu instructor*, legal instructor for misdemeanor prosecutions, instructor on how to do civil mental health commitments regarding critical incidents in Illinois and mentor for criminal investigators and a mentor to a digital forensics master’s program student.
My job pays me well and in return I am “barred” from outside employment. I can volunteer some time to causes or clubs but can not ask for credit, discounts, or money. I am willing to help SSI in ground instructing, wing running, lawn mowing, cleaning, assembly, etc.
As a sport pilot airplane pilot gaining experience in flying gliders I do not mind paying an instructor fee and it does not bother me if they get credits up to 100% of their membership. The other way would be to pay the club for the launch and separately/privately pay the instructor for their time. I realize I am a charming guy and the instructors should pay me for my company but they also deserve some compensation for their job. As an add on pilot I could not teach myself and also rely on either ground launch or tow pilots to get me into the air. I agree that mowing the lawn, keeping the aircraft maintained and in compliance, cleaning, ordering supplies, etc. is also important. Sky soaring allows me to fly a glider and relax. I know that I am not the typical add on pilot who just wants a rating ASAP and then goes away. I enjoy flying with the instructors and when I they have enough of me they send me up in the 1-26 for some peace.
I do not have the answers as to how to compensate the lawn mowing, cleaning, etc. We are a club and together can come up with a solution that offers a balance to encouraging people to become instructors and instructing and tow pilots and keeping others engaged in the other vital duties of running the club. In the future I can become an sport pilot glider flight instructor and teach for free but there are no sport pilot glider instructor DPEs in the area and SSA as a national organization is not supportive of sport pilots for some reason. With that said, I appreciate the daily work of everyone in the club and hope we can come up with equitable compensation for all who go above and beyond. Peace.

Rich WalendaParticipantHello:
Before the club thinks about selling the winch we need to see why it was underutilized. One factor appears to be that we never advertised to the membership which day would be winch launches. There were a few surprise winch launch days but almost nothing scheduled. The winch is a viable backup for the days that the tow plane is out of service. What happens if the tow plane develops a problem that can not be quickly repaired? At least with the winch we can operate.
One unique aspect of Sky Soaring is that we have a winch and tow plane. Moving to just a tow plane operation makes us completely dependent upon the tow plane. That will make it no tow plane, no ops. Not a place we want to be. Past history has shown the club that the tow plane can be out of service in an instant due to an accident or maintenance issues.
So, before thinking of selling the winch we should try a season of scheduled winch launch days. If the winch is under utilized then we can talk about alternative plans. Just popping a “we may sell the winch to another club” upon the membership appears rash. You should never rely on a single source provider (in this case tow plane only). The club is not dead broke. Thanks for reading this and I look forward to other club member opinions.

Rich
Rich WalendaParticipantHello:
Sporty’s Pilot Shop also offers a free FIRC and Ground Instructor refresher via:
https://www.sportys.com/sporty-s-efirc-flight-instructor-refresher-online-course.html
I took the free course to refresh my Advanced Ground Instructor cert.
Thanks for the SSF link. If my schedule allows I may take that one, too.

If things are working right you should not get those pop ups or be redirected. I have logged on a few times today seeking the redirect and can not find it. If it happens again I will try to capture as much information as possible. I do have the first redirect address but will need to open it on a virtual computer to shield from any possible malware. I will do some more investigation on the redirect. I see that our site is an http site, not secure as https. That may have allowed the server host to become compromised. The preliminary info that I was able to trace is that the redirect goes to the Netherlands and the site is only a few weeks old. Regards,Rich

</table>Rich WalendaParticipantHello:I am glad to hear that we are not driving a car leaking fuel that is uninsured and not registered. That would be a State Trooper’s dream stop since it would generate at least 3 tickets and a possible driver’s license suspension for the driver. The car would be impounded and immediately towed off the road. If the car hit someone the litigation would probably cause us to shut down. Thanks for all that provided reasonable solutions to the situation.Regards,Rich
