We had 34 Sky Soaring members attend the safety meeting today. Rich Walenda gave a good presentation on the IMSAFE checklist and what it means to self assess our health and how it may affect our flying and decision-making skills.
Gary Palumbo talked about checklist usage and how they are to be used as challenge and response. He then briefed us on pre-termination of the tow PT3 and how to properly respond to them.
Geoff Weck gave a good presentation on the tow pilots perspective and what is going on in the tow plane cockpit while you are back in the glider doing maneuvers like boxing the wake and slack rope. Geoff also went over the SSA signals While on tow.
I gave a presentation on aviation human factors, and how by Using aeronautical decision-making skills we can avoid incidents and accidents.
After the meeting which ended around 12 noon, we had a crew go out and finish putting in tiedown anchors. We also had a flight operation going with a few pilots flying in the chilly weather.

Just before the last tow, one of the rudder return springs on the tow plane break, so, unfortunately the tow plane will be down until we can replace that spring. It will be ordered on Monday and hopefully by the end of the week it will be installed.
thank you for all that attended the spring safety meeting and you will receive wings credit within the next few days.

Thanks to our Sky Soaring Board & other members who coordinated a very valuable & informative safety meeting to officially kick off our 2024 season. We are very grateful & fortunate to have members in our club who have the knowledge, experience, & skills to be our very own presenters. Each one was able to engage our members to participate much like our very own “Sky Soaring Town Hall meeting.” Scenario based discussions & citing actual incidents as well as research data were very effective to facilitate understanding & learning…very professional. Ending with Mark M. answering Dennis B. questions on simultaneous multiple glider landing as well as previous presenters focus on our particular field situation made it real…all done in a comfortable manner. Thanks to our media team as well as those who set up the hangar making in warm & even bringing coffee & donuts. Great work…thanks a whole bunch…Sky Soaring is a GREAT place to be among friends. Let’s all make this a fun & safe season!!!

I wish to thank Don Grillo and Greg Tomczyk for their thanks to the presenters at our safety meeting. It was well and expertly done. Also thanks to those who performed the set up.
One correction to the tiedown situation needs to be made. There are still at least 3 more trailer tiedowns that need to be installed. The forecast looks like rain for the weekend but if the weather clears enough I would like to get that done on Saturday. If an earlier time works I am open to suggestions.
