Folks, I had my Spring Checkout last Sunday (5/5). John Scott had me do the usual maneuvers on my first two flights. ( I flew 3 flights so that I can up my flight review this year.) I knew and was fully expecting John to pull the release around 250 to 350 feet on my third flight. But he had made arrangements with Nick for something different. At about 350 feet Nick gave me a wave off. Rocking the wings if the Pawnee aggressively so there was no doubt what he meant. I released immediately, turned into the prevailing wind (left in this case) and flew back to the field.
For a medium time pilot it was a very good training event. I got to see something I’ve only seen once before, was given something I wasn’t expecting and was able to demonstrate to my check pilot that I was able to interpret the signal and handle the situation.
We very seldom (if ever) see or get a wave off. I think it was very good of John to add this to my spring check out and I would encourage other Sky Soaring instructors to consider adding this method of premature termination of tow to their repertoire of training scenarios. John Lincoln
