Jimbob will be there for the membership meeting. I’m bringing a nitrogen bottle and regulator to pump up the Krosno landing gear strut.

I’ve seen this happen at SSI, along with the usual knot in the rope from banging along the ground.  The key in any of these situations is to get the knot out immediately and not allow the tow plane to hook up and pull it tight when taking up the slack.  All knots are relatively easy to remove if they have not been tightened.  Once tightened, some can be impossible to get out without compromising the rope.

Wing runners and rope retrievers should be checking the ropes with each hookup.  Simply running the rope through your hand will tell you if there is a knot (be aware of rope burn).  Most knots occur at the glider-end of the rope so it is fairly ease to catch, if you’re paying attention.

      Best Regards,

      John F. Phelan

About avoiding knots in tow ropes. Knots will degrade the rope’s strength to the point that it might be illegal for us to use.

      https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-F/part-91/subpart-D/section-91.309
91.309 (a) (3) – The towline used has breaking strength not less than 80 percent of the maximum certificated operating weight of the glider or unpowered ultralight vehicle and not more than twice this operating weight.

      Best Regards,
      John H DeRosa
