Why we tie down gliders

Have you ever wondered why we tie down the gliders? Here is an example of damage done to a 233 during a microburst. It is important to have all the gliders tied down prior to any thunderstorms approaching the airport. Microburst winds can effect areas 35 miles away from the downburst.  Remember  to keep an eye on the weather especially on days that can produce thunderstorms.

Why do we put a sawhorse under the 233 fuselage when tied down? The reason is to lower the angle of attack of the wing.   This decreases the lifting force on the wing  and thereby helping keep the glider firmly on the ground.
