A long term member some of you may have know has flown west today, Ed Stokes has passed away according to Jim Skog and Pete Rosendale. Ed had moved to Iowa several years ago but kept in touch occasionally. I expect more details will be available soon.

Sorry to hear about Ed Stokes passing.  He was a great guy.  I believe he moved somewhere outside of St. Louis, MO when he left the Chicago area.

For those that didn’t know Ed he was a happy soul who always seemed to have a smile on his face. He loved soaring and helped Sky Soaring in many, many ways including being President. Attached are a couple of pictures of Ed plus an article about his flying life starting in England that he wrote for Soaring Magazine in 2006. Enjoy.

Good memories of Sky Soaring’s past.  Ed was a crusty old Brit that became part of the club personality and he helped preserve SSI and its home, a no nonsense guy.  He and others are the reason that Sky Soaring has survived some challenging times for those who enjoy it today.  Blue skies, Ed.

I see now that the PDF story of Ed’s in 2016 Soaring Magazine was too large to email via our system.

Here is a link to this interesting article.  http://derosaweb.net/aviation/documents/Stokes_Soaring_Article_2006.pdf

So sorry to hear of Ed’s passing. He was a great guy. Ed was no longer flying when I joined the Club, but he often came to the field. He could always be counted on to help run the operation and greatly enjoyed the hanger flying at the end of the day.John O
